Author Spotlight: Jade C. Jamison

Tonight's guest is an author who's been around for quite a while, she writes edgy stories that break the norm. Her latest book is - SAVAGE - and is where she is dipping her proverbial toe into Zompoc. Like my heroine in Odium The Dead Saga, her MC is also called Nina, though from what I've read so far, the characters are vastly different.

Personally I'm loving the book and can't wait to read more, there's romance, danger, and of course...zombies. Look out for my review coming up soon.
I'll hand you over to jade now and let you get to know her and her work a little bit more.

For years, Jade C. Jamison tried really hard to write what she thought was more "literary" fiction, but she found herself compelled to write what you read by her today--sometimes gritty, raw, realistic stories and other times humorous, light tales--but most of the stories she writes revolve around relationships and characters finding their way through life. While she doesn't confine herself to just one genre, nor is there a nice neat label for what she writes, most of her work could be called erotic romance.

She lives in Colorado with her husband and four children.

Kill or Die…

Nina Hardwick has had a rough life since leaving high school, but inside she is still the girl looking for a silver lining.  The past several years have left their toll on her psyche, and just as she feels like she’s climbing out of a deep abyss, her life and the lives of millions of others fall into shambles as a virus overtakes the country and leaves a plague of undead armies scouring the land.

In a desperate attempt to get away from the infected, Nina and some neighbors speed out of town, nearly killing a man on a motorcycle.  When they stop to rescue him, Nina realizes that he is the one man from her past she never got over, the guy who should have been her high school sweetheart until she messed it up.  But this unrequited love, Kevin Savage, says he doesn’t even remember her.  Or does he?

Nina, Kevin, and her neighbors head to the wilderness and fight to survive not only the plague but also hunger, cold, their inner demons…and even each other.  Will they survive and, more importantly, will her heart?

Excerpt
I froze.  My heart was thumping in my chest and time seemed to have slowed to a crawl, so I watched as they got closer and my friends steeled themselves for engagement.  As though I was removed from the action, I saw chopping, swinging, lunging…as if I weren’t there on the battlefield.  Then I saw the violent gray body lunge at me, teeth gnashing and fingers clawing, but I couldn’t make myself move.  All around me, I saw my companions felling these creatures but I couldn’t seem to bring myself to do it.

It would be my demise.

I could hear Kevin beside me, yelling at me while fending off his own attacker, but then he lunged in front of me, shoving the tire iron in the neck of the creature that was ready to eat me alive, making it drop to the ground.

And then, suddenly, it was over.

They were all dead.  My friends’ weapons—and their response—had saved us.

Everything became more vivid then.  The blood seemed even redder on the pristine snow; the skies were a brilliant blue, the evergreens, the richest shade of olive I’d ever seen.

And then time sped up again, and Kevin gripped my shoulders, forcing me to look at him.  I could sense Larry beside me ready to say something too, but he was leaving it up to the man who had my attention.  “You can’t just stand there and do nothing.  They’ll kill you, Nina.  It’s you or them.  Kill or die, Nina Davis.”  His jaw rippled before he repeated each word with force.  “Kill or die.”

In spite of the fear that had drained my body and despite the new appreciation I suddenly had for living, it didn’t escape my attention that he’d called me by my maiden name.

His face was so close to mine, his expression intense, his eyes like cold steel.  He was a thing to be feared, and yet…I expected him to kiss me…

Excerpt 2

“Thanksgiving is probably my favourite holiday—good food and family.”  I said that, but I couldn’t remember the last Thanksgiving that hadn’t felt off.  The year before hadn’t been too long after my husband’s death, and even though I’d spent it with extended family (or, perhaps, because I had), it had felt empty and foreign, and the sympathetic looks towards me and my kids from well-meaning relatives didn’t help.  The year before, my husband had been ailing.  The year before that, I’d been working one of my part-time jobs on that day.  Paid time-and-a-half, but I was away from those I loved.

“Yeah…if you like turkey.”

I laughed.  “Oh, my God, I hate turkey.  I don’t get the appeal.”

“Me, either.”  That was nice.  Something in common we could pretend to commiserate over.  “And the way my mother-in-law always cooked it didn’t do it any favors.  Dry and tasteless.  I’d dump half a shaker of salt on it to make it edible.  I tried gravy once, but her gravy was even worse than the turkey.  What she did was a crime.  I’d wind up drinking way too much beer watching the bowl games with my ex’s family.”

Aha.  That was the first time I’d heard Kevin refer to her as his ex-wife instead of his present-day spouse.  Don’t think for a second that my core didn’t tighten a little as I took note of that fact.

“It’s all in the way you cook it.”

He tilted his head toward me and glanced for a moment but continued looking forward in the way we’d grown accustomed to.  We continually swept the landscape for threats and had gotten so good at it, we didn’t think much about it anymore.  “Yeah?  Would your cooking make me a turkey fan?”

I grinned.  Something inside me thought I’d very much enjoy feeding this man.  “My ham’s better.”

“I don’t know why we torture ourselves like this.”

Oh.  Did he somehow know my filthy, desirous thoughts lurking beneath the surface?

The London Book Affair 2015 #BBA15

An Amazing Day

There has been a lot of talk over the problems that went on at The British Book Affair last weekend, and while they were HUGE issues - lack of food and drink for authors and VIP ticket holders, awful evening entertainment, massive wait lines... seriously, the problems just go on and on, there was also a lot of positives. And if nothing else, the weekend has proven to me what a strong community of Indie authors I'm involved with. These women really do go above and beyond for their readers, and I respect and admire each and every one of them.

The Saturday of the signing started out early, and I was of course nervous as anything, but I shouldn't have worried, because all the amazing readers, other authors, and bloggers made the day incredible. By the end of the very long day, apart from feeling like I was going to faint from hunger and thirst, my arm was aching from the amount of books I signed and I couldn't stop smiling. I got to meet a member of my street team, some amazing bloggers which I speak to on a weekly basis and some truly awesome authors, that I know I'll be friends with for a long time to come.

My husband and I jumped in a cab after the signing and went back to our hotel, where I promptly collapsed on the bed with exhaustion. It wasn't long before we were back in a cab heading to the after party, which yes, sucked so badly, but regardless, I had an amazing time next door in the pub, where in true Classy Claire style, I drank pints of bitter all evening. #keepingitclassy
I had a hilarious evening drinking with A Meredith Walters, Ker Dukey, LH Cosway, our husbands and two wonderful readers.

I was sad to see the end of the weekend, but regardless of the problems, it was an amazing experience, and one I won't forget in a hurry. For those that didn't make it to London to see me, I hope that you'll come to the Birmingham signing in July. (link at the bottom)

Again, I'm sorry if your experience was less than a stellar one, but know that it was beyond any of the authors control, and we are working behind the scenes to set things right with you.
