Title of your book in the event:
Sanctuary from the Dead  (Books of the Dead 1)

In fifteen words or less tell us about the book:
Surviving the zombie apocalypse while trying to maintain your humanity.

Thinking about the particular zombies that you write about, what do you think your chances of survival against them would be?
It’s only because of my advanced state of paranoia that I think I would have a decent chance of surviving, but the fact that I have very little practical skills that reduce my chances.  I can tell decent stories and jokes, though, but I fear the currency for those skills will not be a hot commodity in a zombie filled world.

What would be your zombie apocalypse theme song?
We Will Rock You by Queen

Who would be your zombie apocalypse survival partner?
Celebrity or not.  I was hoping you would let us pick an imaginary partner.  I’d pick someone like Ripley from the first Alien movie or Alice from Resident Evil.  I need a butt-kicking survivalist by my side.  Of course, my wife might object to the fact that I’ve picked women.  To be safe and help me survive the real world I inhabit now, let’s go with Ash from Army of Darkness.

When the shit hits the fan, you get to see the true character of the people around you.  The problem is, in most cases, it’s the character defects that rise to the surface. They say there are no atheists in foxholes, but I can tell you that when things go south, assholes, idiots, and the-every-man-for-himself types come out of the woodwork.  Some of these people find a way to believe -- real fast.  Maybe even me.

Title of your book in the event:
Metanoia

In fifteen words or less tell us about the book:
A woman returns to her hometown to assassinate her husband and finds zombies instead!

Thinking about the particular zombies that you write about, what do you think your chances of survival against them would be?
I created them; I can get inside their head, so my chances of survival are great ;-) Seriously though, these zombies start of as harmless, so I would probably be sucked in like the rest of the town and get eaten straight up.

What would be your zombie apocalypse theme song?
Zombie by The Cranberries

Who would be your zombie apocalypse survival partner? Celebrity or not.
My husband can actually use a crossbow (not saying other zombie apocalypse stars can’t…), so he would definitely be my apocalypse partner.

METANOIA

Definition: n. a spiritual conversion or awakening; a fundamental change of character
Etymology: Greek 'change one's mind, repent'

Marli Anderson has just one task: assassinate Oscar La Monde, the man she once loved.

As assassin for hire for the prestigious Merrick’s Inc., she is sent back to her home town to kill the man she now loathes beyond all others—her husband. Considering they are on opposing sides of the uprising, Marli anticipates an easy task; ‘closure’ they call it. The fact that she can exact her revenge for his past discretions is just the icing on the cake.

When she arrives, the town has changed. The man she hated is unexpectedly welcoming. And the town’s folk—well, they’re just… different. Someone or something has transformed them all into a bunch of zombies. They appear to be harmless - but are they?

As she begins to uncover details of who may be behind the townsfolk’s’ metamorphosis, Marli is left fighting for the truth. Will she and Oscar be able to unravel the web of deception before it’s too late?

Should she trust her heart or her head? Which is less likely to get her killed?

Either way, METANOIA is a heart-stopping zombie apocalypse adventure that will keep you guessing at every twist and turn until the very end.

EXCERPT

Long fingernails clicked furiously over the keyboards as Hannah finished up the returns from the day. She was waiting for the blond woman who didn’t know how to use the catalog to get the hell out of there. After all Dylan was waiting for her to get off work, it was their fifth date and Hannah had bought new underwear for the occasion.  She smiled dreamily to herself imagining how it would happen. She wanted it to be in his car. He had an old, black impala with a big back seat. They could use the front seat too, however it happened, she was more than prepared for it. If she could just get that woman to leave.

The library job was a sweet gig, most nights she was out of there by eleven except for during exam week, that was always hellish, but it was expected. Weekend nights were the best though, she could close up as early as seven if no one had been there for an hour or more. She was always gone by nine. The library didn’t close until eleven, but she never had to worry about that. She checked the time, quarter past ten, and flipped her hair impatiently. What in the world did that woman want to read so much about anyway? She decided to go find out.

“How are you doing ma’am?” She asked demurely as she walked up behind the blond lady, she was almost hidden from view by the stacks of books she had pulled down. Hannah frowned at those stacks, it would take her forever to get them put away.

“I’m wonderful, thank-you. What time do you open tomorrow?”
“Seven.”
“And what time do you close?”
“Weekends we close at eleven, ma’am”
“And what time is it now?”
“Twenty after ten.”
“Is it really that late?” the woman looked startled as she raised her head from the pages for the first time.
“Yes ma’am, I’m afraid it it.”
“Fiddlesticks!” the exclamation made Hannah snort with laughter and she quickly pretended to have a coughing fit. “Are there any late night cab services?”
“Of course, would you like the number?”
“I don’t have a phone.”
“Oh, well, I suppose I could call them for you.”
“Would you mind? That is terribly nice, thank-you so much!”
“No problem at all.” Hannah walked back to the front desk and phoned the cab company, the woman began sorting piles, adding the largest stack to the returns cart, but she set aside about six books, then gathered up her purse and jacket before carrying those books to the counter.
“I’m so sorry I kept you here so long!”
“It’s no trouble at all” Hannah lied through her teeth, her date was pretty well ruined at this point.
“Would you mind putting my name on these? I’ll be back in the morning to go through them some more.”
“Sure, no problem!”
“Thank-you!” and with that, the blond woman was finally gone. Hannah, yanked her phone violently from under the counter and dialed Dylan.
“Babe? Are you still up for it?.....You’re the best! Meet me out front in ten?” She hung up and squealed in delight, kicking back her left foot as she spun in a gleeful circle. Tonight was definitely the night. She quickly scribbled down a name and “blond woman” on a post-it that she tossed on the pile of books the lady had left. She would do the rest in the morning, since she was there all day it wouldn’t matter. Hannah practically flew out of the front doors and as she turned, too quickly, to lock them she twisted her ankle falling backward down the large stone steps. There was wet, crackling, thud as her head hit the pavement.

Hannah felt the thick ooze of blood in her hair, oddly she thought of how disappointed she was that she had never been brave enough to dye it red before her eyes closed in the welcome fog of death.

“OH MY GOD! Hannah! Hannah!”

There was a noise, and a scent that drew her back from the comfort of her dark nothing, and Hannah opened her eyes, she saw the source of the noise and the scent. There was a creature, leaning over her, she grasped the creature and drew it towards her, hungry for that smell, the need drove her, and she was biting down into soft, warm flesh. She ate until it stopped making sounds.

Excerpt: Sifu and Tou-dai

Sleep came easily to Zhen Wu that night but it was a hard journey through the night. Without any volition on his part he tossed and turned nearly as much as if he were awake. Janice had no idea what was going on but she kept watch over him with the idea of attempting to keep him from causing himself any sort of harm.

Inside that place we call sleep Zhen Wu was dealing with his own demons, literally; they attacked him from every side. Sometimes they attacked singly, sometimes in small hordes of twelve or so. Knowing that he was in a dream state allowed him to summon his ancestors’ sword as he had in previous such predicaments and to wield it effectively against them. In most other cases he would have only stood them off where he initially appeared but this time was different; ahead of him he could see two of them trying to carry off Marcy and he was not willing to lose her again.

So he fought his way through an ever increasing horde of demon spawn.

There was no sense of time in this place, there was no sense of distance but he refused to let the distance between himself and Marcy get longer. His movement was a constant surge toward her with only one aim, to get Marcy free of the demons binding her. So he willed himself to make two steps forward movement for every one he saw them take; then when they managed to get a third step further, he fought to move forward four. The sword moved of its own volition; guiding his hands to where it needed to strike, all he had to do was to listen to the sword’s call without questioning it.

Eventually he began to sense a desperation to their attacks and this gave him a renewed sense of purpose. The two who held Marcy began to call out to others to join the fight, berating and insulting them when they showed the slightest hesitation. Zhen Wu maintained his silence and focused his strength into forward movement. Now he was taking two steps for every step which they took and moving forward at a faster clip than he had been. Soon after he’d noticed the change in the two demons, he noticed that the pattern of the demonic attack seemed different.

It took some time but he came to understand that unlike before, the demons were now coming to him in two streams flowing around him and then being forced together by some obstacle ahead of them. Something which not even they could fight against or resist; knowing this gave him the strength to press forward against them even harder.

As Zhen Wu fought his way forward he began to make out the details of what lay ahead. Little by little, a gate could be seen, not a simple gate built as any other gate in America would be built, of nails and timber, but a gate built entirely without any iron. Pinned together by wood and reinforced by vines growing around it; nearly as thick as a brick wall. But it was what lay on either side of the gate which gave him pause.
A cliff
…. and the demons carrying Marcy seemed intent on throwing her into the abyss beyond.
Not
Again
NOT
AGAIN
Roaring, he charged forward scattering the demons before him as if they were toys on a playroom floor. Without any conscious thought a cry erupted from his throat, “Xi Wang Mu ….. help your grandson before all is lost!”

He felt no difference, no change, but as his sword moved itself to the left and the right, upwards and downwards, he felt a new strength and gradually became aware of a soft red glow enveloping him. With renewed purpose he leapt into the air; executing a move that had only ever been seen in movies, creating a whirlwind of steel. A whirlwind that sucked in the demons and shredded them until at last, he was left with only the two who bore Marcy. They cowered in front of the gate, still holding her, but no longer certain of what they needed to do with the young woman.

Zhen Wu stalked forward, shoulders rolled forward, arms slightly out from his body and his sword, his living blade, now twitching as it sought more demons to slay. He stopped some twenty feet short of the gate, glaring at the demons who’d attempted to steal away the young woman who had captured his heart as no other ever had.

The daughter of his soul.

Thicker than Blood by Madeline Sheehan & Claire C. Riley cover and blurb reveal!

For those of you that follow me on my Facebook page, you'll know that I've been busy in my writing cave for a while now, working hard on Odium III The Dead Saga of course, but also on a #supersecretproject Well today all is revealed. Here's the cover and blurb reveal for THICKER THAN BLOOD an amazing book that I've been co-writing with USA Today Bestselling author Madeline Sheehan.

Picture

Thicker than Blood blurb

True friendship never dies.

Leisel and Evelyn lost everything. Husbands. Families. Friends. Lives that mad sense. All they had left was each other, and a friendship that could withstand anything…

Even an apocalypse.

Until one fateful night, the marginal safety they’d come to rely on comes to a vicious and brutal end. With the help of Alex and Jami, both unlikely allies, Leisel and Evelyn are able to escape their shattered sanctuary only to find themselves face-to-face with a much altered, much crueler life where they have to find the way—and the will—to stay alive in a world they no longer recognize.

Traveling across a broken and infection-ridden country; the road-weary group are pitted against endless violence, improbable circumstances, and the ultimate loss.
Everything comes at a price—especially safety, the cost of which could very well strip them of the one thing they’ve tried so hard to cling to: their humanity.

Yet along with all the trials they’re forced to endure, there’s also hope in the form of love. Having loved Leisel from afar, Alex attempts putting the pieces of her fractured heart back together. But in such a savage world, is there room for love?

In a place of nightmares-made-reality, where the living should be feared far more than the dead, an unbreakable friendship and a love amongst all odds can mean the difference between life and death.

Author Eric A. Shelman Guest Blog Post: Winter Of Zombie Blog Tour 2014

14/11/2014

I am so happy to have the very awesome Eric A. Shelman on my blog again today,
promoting The Winter of Zombie Blog Tour and one of his books Dead Hunger VII: The Reign of Isis.

Eric is such a great guy, both hilarious and kind and extremely talented. If you haven't started

his series yet, I highly recommend his work.

But anyway, let me hand you over to him before I give the guy a big head! :0)

Picture
Hey, everyone.  Author Eric A. Shelman here, creator of the Dead Hunger zombie series, now at SEVEN novels.  Welcome to my teaser for the WINTER OF ZOMBIE BLOG TOUR!

Haven’t done a blog in a while.  I get working on books and I can neglect this.  I don’t think I have a shitload of followers yet anyway, so I’m not sure many people feel ripped off.  If you’re one of them who does, let me say, “Sorry ‘bout that.”

Dead Hunger VII: The Reign Of Isis USA
Dead Hunger VII: The Reign Of Isis UK

As a lot of you know, I finished Dead Hunger VII: The Reign of Isis (above), and released it in early July, 2014.   After that, I went to work on a story that popped in my head called The Camera.  It was originally going to be called “The Camera: Origin,” but as usual, a stroke of genius or idiocy strikes me and I act on it.  This time, the stroke made me change the title to “The Camera: Bloodthirst.”

The reason?  Origin is a shitty name for a Russian Organized Crime family.  “Bloodthirst” translates to Krovozhadnost in Russian, which I can pronounce.  Origin is “Proiskhozhdeniye,” which I can’t pronounce even when it is written in English.  Let’s sound it out together:  Proisk – hozh – den – I – ye.”

Forget it.  Kro-Voz-Had-Nost.   You can do that.  I can do that.

No need to even change the spelling.

So anyway, I wrote that book and I had a proofreader go over it.  Had some beta readers get into it.  To my surprise, they liked it more than I hoped for.  I’ve often said that after writing a book, I’m so close to it I have no idea whether it’s any good or not.  I think I know that it’s intense and I hope that I took the plot and escalated it properly, ramping things up until my reader is burning through pages.

That is ALWAYS my goal.  You will never kick back and put your feet up and read an Eric A. Shelman book – not without your heart kicking in.  As I’ve often said, once I ramp things up, I never want to slow them down again until you close the back cover.

So, as usual for a non-zombie book release, my true fans are all over it, but all the zombie fanatics are mostly offering congratulations, but no purchase cash.

If I had to compare my story to anything, I would have to go back to the old movies I loved as a kid, like “The Incredible Two-Headed Monster,” and “The Thing With Two Heads,” both of which I saw in a double feature on their original releases.  You the “Reanimator” series in there as a comparison – definitely.

I have a good fan base of zombie people, so after Dead Hunger, my (as of now) 7-book zombie series concludes, I will begin a new series.  I have a VERY unique idea for this 1st person zombie story, told by someone with whom you are all very familiar.

A fictional someone.    No, no.  Shut the fuck up.  I’m not telling you.  Not gonna happen.  Oh.  Now you’re acting like you don’t care.  You’ll care when the book comes out, that I can tell you.   Yes, it will be a new series, and I think it’s going to be awesome.

BUT let’s get back to my newest Dead Hunger.  It’s going to be called: “Dead Hunger VIII: Peace, Love & Zombies.”  It is, if you haven’t yet guessed, the Nelson Moore Chronicle.  He is the grandson of a gynecologist, a stoner with a photographic memory, and the inventor of his own brand of passive self defense called Subdudo.  It’s a combination of Subdue and Judo.

It works.  Nelson’s smarter than he looks.  Smarter than he acts.  He’ll explain himself appropriately in book #8.

So I guess it’s time to say that I’m SO DAMNED HAPPY to be included in the Winter of Zombie Blog Tour 2014 (/2015?).  Armand Rosamilia is the man who invited me – he did this Summer, too, but I flaked and missed out on it.   So it’s great to be here, and hopefully with the talent surrounding me, you’ll actually begin to believe I’ve got writer’s chops, too.  Then you’ll buy the first Dead Hunger – which was recently reduced to $0.99 for Kindle – and start on a journey that will take you over 2,700 pages down a post-apocalyptic road on which you’ve never traveled.  The reviews get more glowing as the series progresses, and if you even “pretty much like” book one, it will become more and more dear to your heart as you roll through books two through 7 – and possibly 8 by the time you’re all done.

So – Joe McKinney, Armand Rosamilia, Jaime Johnesee, John O’Brien, Shawn Chesser, Jack Wallen,  Bobby Adair, Mark Tufo, Jay Wilburn and YOURS TRULY will be featured this year … and let’s all join with me in HOPING LIKE HELL I don’t fuck this up.

Thanks for being here.  That makes all of us.

                                                                        *   *   *   *   *

She’s dead.

In fact, the whole world’s dead. Every single person, apparently. Unburied and reimagined into a beautiful living-dead woman called Winter, she is doomed to spend the rest of eternity in a quaint, peaceful city with no hunger, no sickness and no bills to pay. Her Second Life is perfect in every way possible.

So why is she so bent on destroying it all?

After angering the mayor, befriending rebel headless teenagers and igniting romance with a dark and brooding neighbor, she finds herself wrestling madly with a First Life she cannot remember and this Second Life she cannot accept. Not to mention the maniacal army of rotting corpses who want her dead. Again.

But none of that matters in comparison to an even bigger problem. There’s a guest in her house. A rude, good-looking man on the run ... a man with a heartbeat.

Dead of Winter #2 of The Beautiful Dead trilogy OUT NOW!

Meet Daryl!

Picture
Daryl Banner is a writer and composer who graduated from the University of Houston with a degree in Theatre and Psychology.

He does not write in any single genre, as his stories tend to span several. He is most inspired by the smart and unlikely hero, but urges you (the reader) not to fall in love with them; they may deceive you with their innocence. He is thrilled by putting his characters in terrible situations where they must face choices and challenges that seem impossible to overcome.

Daryl Banner writes contemporary fiction, sci-fi/fantasy (both in medieval and futuristic senses), unique takes on the apocalypse and paranormal romance genre, as well as magic realism. He cannot wait to hear what you think about his stories and welcomes (and responds to!) all feedback.

Interesting tidbits: Daryl is also an obsessive piano player, video game enthusiast, and occasional actor. He's been remixing video game music for over fifteen years, and is a passionate Final Fantasy fan. You can feed your ears with many of his remixes (as well as his original music) on his YouTube page "www.youtube.com/DarylBanner". Also, he personally answers all emails he receives, so if you have some strange desire to write him, he may enjoy it. He currently resides in Texas.
